Give Thanks, y’all.

Happy Thanksgiving. The family is all around, and all is not quiet in the house as the girls (including myself) struggle to listen to the dialogue of Grey’s Anatomy as the adults talk in the background. Somehow, I believe that Chinese adults have a duty to speak to each other in loud voices, at a pitch mathematically formulated to negate the sounds of a television as their children watch in earnest.

My contribution to this year’s Thanksgiving was six caramel-pecan pies (which has become my signature dessert for family get-togethers). I carved the turkey, using tips I gleaned from Yahoo! Food, in a turkey-carving video featuring the Doyenne of Domesticity, Martha Stewart.

So what are we thankful for this year? Well, I for one am thankful that I made it to age 22. This year, I had two dear friends of mine pass away prematurely. The first was Bibiana, a dear high-school classmate of mine, and just last month, I found out that John, my dearest friend from Puerto Rico who went to the University of Miami with me, was in a fatal car accident. What really devastated me was the fact that I could not attend any of their funerals of memorial services, underlining the sad reality of my life, where work and career really reign supreme in most aspects.

The only thing I have to look forward to tomorrow is the dreaded Black Friday event. For those in retail, the day after Thanksgiving is usually one of the busiest times of the year.

One little tidbit: I learned that the term Black Friday actually comes from the fact that most retail stores go into the black on this day due to higher than usual sales, compared to going into the red, which is not a good thing.
