Books & Movies

Despite the fact that I’m in “emergency-mode” in apartment hunting to find a place by the end of next week, I’ve been having quite a few good days. i spent last week at work and home in Lawrenceville, relaxing a bit, and just maybe “getting away” from things “within the Perimeter” for a few days on my days off. It was something I needed, and a great break from the roommate. Now that we are nearing the end of our last month in the apartment, I’m starting to grow more irritable at some habits, guests, and attitudes of his.
Work has been a bit crazy lately. I’ve been coming home just exhausted, I mean, I was so exhausted, I actually put of getting the new Harry Potter book (“Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (Book 6)” (J.K. Rowling))to Saturday, instead of Friday at midnight. I had pre-ordered it, and also picked up “Specimen Days : A Novel” (Michael Cunningham) at 25% off. And not only did I NOT finish the book the same day I got it, I only managed to start it on Sunday morning on my work commute, and finished it by 3am that same night. Those who really know me know that I am a bit of a Harry Potter fan, so I have to say that i thoroughly enjoyed the book. I will not give away any spoilers (because I find it just annoying that those people who do not read the book know certain plot twists). Now I’m digging into Specimen Days, and being very pleased with it. Nowadays, I’m actually leaving my laptop behind in the apartment, and going to work and about with just my book, notebook, and pens. To some people, the idea of me leaving home without my laptop is just preposterous.
I am currently apartment-hunting, due to the fact that my roommate has decided not to renew the lease, and we shall be moving out at the end of the month. Already, the roommate has already driven me crazy in the past month by not only having his girlfriend suddenly move in, but also having his friend from Colorado, his girlfriend’s friend who suddenly showed up, and her sister staying in our apartment for a few weeks. I pay half of the rent, and having all these people in our two-bedroom was a bit preposterous. I am feeling a bit nervous about being able to find an apartment within my price range and still be accessible to work and (possibly) school, but I am at a point where when I should be frantic, but I’m relaxing, because I know that I am trying all I can, and that in the end, all will be well.
I just have to believe.
On another note, I went on one of those pseudo-dates tonight. Been talking to a guy online for a while, and we finally met to “hang out”, and I suggested catching a movie at Midtown Art Cinema. Mysterious Skin was showing at 7:45, so we set a time to meet, and after spending some time at outwrite with Herman discussing graph theory (not really discussing, but more of a topic of conversation, since he was the engineering student, and me, a lowly ex-chem major turned graphic designer/sociologist), I met Mark for the first time, and we went off to watch the movie. I footed the bill, because I was the one who insisted on a movie, since the original idea of “a night in” was nixed by the presence of the roommate and a full sink of dishes. I mean, nothing is more unsexy than unwashed dishes in the sink.
Two minutes into the movie, I was starting to regret my choice, as I was welling up with anticipation and with awe, but I realized that the movie might be a bit heavy for a “first-time meeting” movie. As a movie about childhood pedophilia affects its victims, it was unnerving at times, but I took it all in stride. There was some great acting, and sex, but by the end of the movie, while the content of the film was a bit much, we both thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We then grabbed at bite at Joe’s, the one place I can depend on for a bite after 11pm in Midtown, where I would like to think that we had a very fun conversation. I mean, when the topics of discussion include naming schemas for personal computers, what’s not to love? By the end of the night and after he dropped me off at my apartment, I realized that I thoroughly enjoyed myself, and am looking forward to seeing him again.
